for me, it is probably the hardest lesson of the 4 golden lessons that Steven Weinberg shared in his article published about 3 years ago... or rather "to forgive [myself] for wasting time" because "in the real world, it's very hard to know which problems are important, and you never know whether at a given moment in history a problem is solvable."... you try anyways... you try until you give up on one possibility and then move to try the next... always trying...
it is the exhaustive effort and search that drives me to the brink of insanity... and it is so hard to forgive oneself for wasting all the time in trying... sigh... harder still for anyone else who's not trying to do what you are doing to comprehend why you bother in the first place... or why things won't work... or why everything isn't as straightforward as it possibly could or should... why there are no answers like in the problems you solve in mathematics class back at school...
it's scary just being aware that much of what you go through in school doesn't really prepare you for the real world... or how to deal with uncertainty... or why life is very much an amalgam of compromises... or perhaps i am just a slow learner?
