sigh...

i wish i weren't so shy... and that i won't feel so awkward so easily!

people here at the lab have been helping me settle into the place and loaning/giving me bits and pieces of furniture/things and i feel very grateful... but i also feel really awkward at the same time... >>*i don't deserve all these nice things and attention!*

one of the main researchers here, too, have been 'looking after' my well-being... and brought me a bottle of french wine today as a celebratory thing for the labour day weekend...

i'm also rather scared of my main supervisor here... i know he's not a monster but he's scarily bright and i have a chronic tendency of feeling very dumb...

urgh. i hate it... i have to talk myself into being brave and confident every day and then it goes back to square-one in the morning... =C(

i ought to be a turtle...

yes, you must learn to be less "paiseh" about things!!! Must learn to accept people's goodwill graciously 'cos i'm sure you'll have chances to return the favours!

In any case, glad to know that people are helping you settle in!

I generally feel that 1) Westerners aren't as shy as Asians. 2) So when you're living in their country, don't be shy! Be like them! :)

Before I went to graduate school, my mentor told me I'd need a lot of thick skin to survive. As Van says, you do need to rid yourself of your shyness. I only succeeded when I went to tango class. Elsewhere, I was a clam. I managed to graduate though. =) Don't feel bad about yourself; you are a very bright and accomplished person too - think about that every time you feel insignificant in a crowd.
