snippets...

i took some lovely pics of daffodils while walking to the office on sunday... they might give you a wrong impression of how lovely it must be... that spring is perhaps here to stay... except the weather was miserable today... wet, cold and windy.

i made something more of a real dinner today: chicken stew with chinese herbs and spices... and adding half a bottle of cheap german riesling wine (which needs to be consumed!) -- you reckon it's the last ingredient i bet?!

i found a recipe for Banoffi (aka Banoffee) pie which doesn't require the rather dangerous method of boiling the tin of condensed milk with 2 wee holes pierced into the lid to create a caramel-like stickey goo... if it works -- which i shall attempt tomorrow for A's birthday surprise (i doubt it is sucha big surprise) -- you shall all be introduced to an incredibly fun dessert at some point in time (when i get a chance to upload more pics)... wish me lots of luck!!!

the wound scabs below my eyebrow have fallen off... wee patches of pinkiness are apparent... which i will have to live with... guess i might have to wink more to divert attention...

anyways another new day...

Do you know how hungry that makes me feel? And still an hour to lunch... Banoffee pie is perhaps my favourite of all the pies, so I will be very interested to hear this recipe. Respect, too, for the fact that you do it the proper (Mexican? Brazilian?) way with the boiling a can of condensed milk. I've always cheated and bought a jar of banoffee caramel stuff! Boiling the can sounds much more fun though. And, like you say, much more dangerous!

(btw. I think you have every right to be rude to someone who keeps pestering you with trivial stuff. Particularly on a Sunday morning! Sometimes people need to be told...)

=C) thanks nick! will let you know how and if this recipe works... and then you can try it in the Okinawa and share it with your friends. i've not made Banoffe pie for 5 years!!! imagine that. crikey.

btw how do you create your spiffy picture-buttons in your archives? they are way cool. =C)

oh, Banoffi pie!!! I haven't had it in 5 years! The last time you made it must have been when D & I visited you in Edinburgh 5 years ago, no? but i still remember our lovely meal at Howie's. The Banoffi pie there was yums!

Thanks! Those pictures... I just make a little square image out of some photo I took that month, and use that. I've set it up so that if it can't find an image for that month (say '2004-07.jpg'), it uses a default one. And I just realised that that's what it's been doing for the last seven months, because I've forgotten to make any proper images. Doh!

For making the images, there's a little piece of free software (for PC) called Irfanview that I find very handy. It's good for resizing & chopping up images, and you can do a batch at the same time.

yup dsd... that was the very last time i made the pie... when you guys came to visit. it was so long ago. didn't we have fun?!

sadly, Howies at St. Leonard's Str. has been taken over by another restaurant. but there's one near where i am currently living, although i've not been there since i've returned. hmm... i really should eat out more!

thanks for all the tips, nick! IrfanView is really a spiffy gadget; i used it when i was doing a lab-rotation at the molecular lab where i had to take digital pictures of schwann cells at a different wavelength... but i haven't used it in a while! i really should. it's rather user-friendly. i'll try all that when i get a chance to fiddle about with the blog =c) ...wow you must know lots of cool tricks with setting a rule which goes to default LVA.jpg -- that's terribly cunning! =C) pity you couldn't catch the whale close-up... that would have been a really cool shot!

You already have Irfanview! Nice!

The thing with the default picture - I stubbornly hand-made my site, so I can sort-of make it do what I want when it comes to things like that (but which is why it's also not fancy enough to have comments - I'm hoping to fix that soon). I'd imagine there would probably be a way to do the same with Moveable Type, but it might be a bit complicated... I don't know anything much about MT, though, so I'm guessing really.

btw. from what I heard, the Howies on St.Leonard's St (now called Blonde, right?) is run by the former head chef from Howies. So it's a different restaurant, but not entirely different... (And the food there is very good too!)

Man, Banoffi pie and Edinburgh seems like light years ago. Has it really been five long years already. Damn, how did I age those years without me realising!

Good luck with the pie and remember to post the recipe so I can try it here on the other side of the World!
