i was rude this morning...

i've been too nice.

first i read her draft of the results section and pointed out a lot of things she overlooked in terms of data presentation and potentially flawed interpretations -- which i expect a final-year student to know / expected her supervisors to have pointed them out.

then i sat xy down last week (despite all the programming work i had to do) when she came into the office in desperation (like the look of "help me or i will cry") to seek help with plots in the stats. program (which i really am not fond of because it gives ugly plots among other things) to show her how to plot graphs with errorbars in excel which i expected her to know anyways or at least have the initiatives to open up the darn program that exist in virtually all microsoft enabled computers and just try it. (you don't come into uni to get spoonfed!!!)

xy rang again about thesis queries (woke me up while i tried to catch my sunday lie-in)... about word-limit and page-count... both of which are guidelines anyways... not set in stone default requisites. moreover depending on the Fonts used, line spacing, figures etc. the number of pages will not necessarily be the same as stated in guidelines. you either go with page-count as a guideline or by word-count... which i think is most common. if you are within the limit or thereabouts, that's fine. so i told her directly HOW TRIVIAL A QUESTION THIS WAS... which btw, she should be addressing to the course organiser or her supervisor and NOT ME...

now i am feeling guilty for being rude... how annoying!!! crap.

(truth: i am not always a nice, furry, friendly and bouncy tiggie)

Hey tiggie,

Its ok to tell people off lah. Especially when its something as trivial as that!! I think you can't be nice all the time. Then the other person will not know/learn.

yah, i second what fatgirl says. Anyway, i can't imagine you being rude. I suspect that she won't even quite get it that you were annoyed. But i certainly hope she did so she won't bother you anymore with such trivial stuff!

I'll fourth that! Man, I'd probably have been ruder much earlier than you. You've been most tolerant ... but yes don't get bullied by your students! They need to have more initiative than that!

i don't think you were rude at all....she deserved it for asking such a no-brainer question, and for disturbing your Sunday nap :=)
