i spent a good part of this afternoon browsing through some medical books on motor control, the (interdisciplinary) field in which my PhD research is based, and a field which appears a very thick and densely foliaged forest with thorny bushes, and stealthy creatures, wherein i am to make out a wee path and find my way safely through? trying to decide on what one should Xerox from a book is sometimes a torturous contemplative exercise, particularly for someone as indecisive as me.
after some chapters from various sources were copied, hunger pangs summoned my better decision to head home, away from the cold departmental building (an old boarding school house) and the loneliness that was slowly settling in.
out into the soft drizzling haze i rescued my poor wet bike (chained to the iron railings bordering the building) from its captivity. instead of riding it swiftly back through the meadows and up the gentle green hill, i walked the journey. the hazy wetness that seemed to hang in the air has a certain mystifying feeling. cherry-blossoms lining both sides of the Jaw-bone walk were pink in bloom. the recent rain-wind-rage which i had apparently missed, had strewn the pretty petals along the path, giving it a surreal feel of a fairy-tale paradise with the silhouettes of Arthur?s Seat and the Crags in the distant. how stark a contrast it felt to the wintry bareness on the twiggy and wind-slanted branches, and the fleeting presence of fresh snow that laced the black uneven tarmac.
Scotsmen in kilts and others in tuxedos passed me by... there must be a Ceilidh tonight... have i mentioned how attractive men look in those chequered skirts?
i made a detour via Alphabet, the video rental shop, and got out a French film "Le Chignon d?Olga" on dvd by J?r?me Bonnell, and a chicken Kebab from the next door Takeaway before heading towards the wee loft.
more readings and perhaps an effortful start on German grammar revision will occupy the remainder of this weekend, a film for well-earned distractions, and the occasional pitter-pattering on the sky-light window for company.
