had a morning of cello lesson with Andrew.... finally! after weeks of various distractions.... i wouldn't say i played brilliantly... considering how infrequent i practice...(terrible i know) but despite that, i suppose there are some signs of improvements... and can i say i am chuffed to have to learn and practice Menuet I&II of the first Suite of six Suites that Bach wrote for the cello (as opposed to trying to play it secretly!)..... i also discovered that the original manuscript that Bach wrote apparently went missing and the copies that survived all have different markings for bowing/fingerings, depending on who edited them.... whilst i was in T?bingen, i got a copy of his scores (in the hope that i might one day play something from it) which had been edited by Mainardi, which came as rather surprising to Andrew because most people have another version by someone else whose name i have already forgotten. ...i don't really know much about who anyone maybe anyways! but i thought it was amusing....
we ended the session listening to two different interpretations of the Menuets.... one by Pablo Casals, who i feel gave a more lively rendition (i do like his interpretation more than Yo-Yo Ma's... i'd love to get Casals' recordings!), and the other by Anner Bylsma, who played it in a more Baroque style. i will probably never get anyway near their kind of professionalism... but boy am i happeee to be learning to play Bach (even if i sound terrible and my fingers get all confused with the changing of positions)!
