all the leaves are green

cycling home yesterday, i felt a sense of joy i haven't felt for a while.... everything can only get better....

thursday was one of the worst days i had.... i had to reconfigure my new office pc because microsoft was trying to outwit users... the patriarchal design meant that some initial configurations are irreversible and i didn't want to re-edit my programming scripts (changing the path directories) all the time so i decided to reconfigure the whole system from scratch.... but some drivers ended up being uninstalled and their files were not present in the included recovery CD provided by RM.... i panicked and thought about horrible things that could happen to me... most crucially i had horrible images of our main system administrator looking exceedingly pissed off.... decided that maybe if i repeated the reconfiguration it'd might work.... that i tried... but had to leave half-way at about 10:30pm to cycle home and pick up my extra laptop case and cycled back into town to the train station to meet Ruth who's leaving for london and then for nepal today...... while cycling back into town my bike's front-brakes snapped just as i stopped to wait for the pedestrian-cyclist's lights to turn green.... it could have been worse i told myself. then decided to wheel the bike when i got to the top of the hill all the way to Waverley train station in case something awful did happen. i managed to catch Ruth before the train left.... phew... made my way back to the department only to find the front gates locked... just as i decided to go home, Annabel was on her way out. she had a key! i asked if i could borrow it for the night and sure i was able to.... into the office i completed the reinstallation only to find the same uninstalled hardwares.... went home and told myself i have to ask the other system administrator for help the next day....

friday morning... first thing i did when i got up was to call DELL and interrogated them about my new motherboard which was supposed to be an inspiron and not what it became, a latitude. got passed round like a ball used in a game of catch.... questioned all the technical assistants who do not always give the same answers.... just like LUFTHANSA's personnel. apparently both systems share the same motherboard... (and when the enginner came again later in the day to replace the lcd which is finally in the right size, i got a diskette to change the bios flash so it says inspiron instead of latitude. bizarre i thought... but everything seems to work now... let's hope it stays like this.)

cycled to BicycleWorks to get my brakes fixed and then rushed into the dept. and tried to get hold of the office pc's specification and warranty info. from the other sytem administrator .... glad he sympathetically gave them to me. phoned up RM and got the required driver files off the www and now everything is fine.... reinstalled the programmes.... yes... i am finally there...

marked 2 reports during all the installation process and watched my laptop undergo another transplantation and survived.... it's all going to be okay i told myself.... next week i will be able to work properly and not fight with computers again.

on my way home.... i noticed that spring has come to stay for a while...and summer will not be far away now..... the trees which had been naked for the past chilly months have now new leafy crowns.... green they are... tulips and cherry blossoms are all out.... yes even nature agrees.... everything could only get better!
