a few exciting things!

i got quite a few things today: a 27cm non-stick wok set (because i am hopeless at using the stainless steel frying pan that came with the studio-flat!), a pancake pan (!), two good French Sabatier knives (because the IKEA ones that the landlord provided are not brilliant and you can't cook without good tools!), batteries and re-writable CDs to back up files! and a linen-like woollen Indian scarf.

.........and ...........

i got really intrigued by the Mac G4 powerbook on display at John Lewis (a departmental store i frequent because of their good sales services)..... spoke to the store's Mac consultant and i have to admit it is really going to be so suitable for the type of scientific research analysis i am getting myself into and i am not sure when the G5 powerbook will appear (soon i hope!) ...i had a peek into the Power Mac G5 CPU -- all these Macs are a work of art -conceptually, functionally and aesthetically! it's incredible! hmmm.....difficult decisions....computers and technology keep improving and it's never easy to know when to upgrade your appliances sometimes....dilemma.....i should check out the apple store to ask about student discounts.....hmmm can't believe i am almost converting into a mac-promoter and i grew up with a pc! oh boy.

Do it! Macintosh computers don't date nearly as fast as Windows because the company that writes the system software also makes the computer. With the latest version of the system (Panther) I'm using a 1999 powerbook and a 2000 desktop G4 to great effect - doing some heavy DTP every day in fact. With a little know-how I could be using 1998 gear with it. Apple are very kind about making things back-compatible. Hit me with questions if you have 'em!

hey Gaijin, thanks for all that encouragement and advise....have posted some queries and am going to have a go on my supervisor's G3 cube when he brings it in to replace the rather defunct P2 that is sleeping in my wee office!
